Our History

The Boshi Aiiku Kai (Mother and Child Health Care) Foundation was established on March 13, 1934, based on an Imperial decree issued by Emperor Shōwa following the birth of the current Emperor Emeritus on December 23, 1933.

At the time of its founding, Japan was facing severe economic depression and numerous social challenges. There was no Ministry of Health and Welfare (now the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) or public health centers, and maternal and child healthcare was largely overlooked. To fulfill its founding mission, the Aiiku Foundation established the Aiiku Research Committee in May 1934, bringing together leading experts from various fields to conduct scientific research relevant to societal needs.

To further develop this work, the Aiiku Research Institute in November 1938 to conduct comprehensive research on child and maternal care and education. The following month, the Aiiku Medical Clinic (Pediatrics) opened as its clinical department.

While initially focused solely on pediatrics, Obstetrics was added in December 1940, achieving the institution's original mission of "providing medical care for children and expectant mothers, along with childbirth support and infant care services".

Under the regulation of the Medical Care Act in 1949, the institution was renamed "Aiiku Hospital." Since then, we have continued to operate as a specialized maternal and child healthcare facility, with all departments working in close coordination to provide compassionate and continuous care for mothers and children.

How to Support Aiiku Hospital

Aiiku Hospital was founded in 1938 with funds granted by Emperor Shōwa, honoring the birth of the current Emperor Emeritus. The hospital was founded under the Boshi Aiiku Kai (Maternal and Child Health Foundation), established in 1934, with the mission of improving maternal and child healthcare, given the fact that such services were largely neglected.
We strive to provide the highest quality medical care for our patients. However, we recognize that there are limitations to what we can accomplish through our own resources alone. To continue our role as a leading institution helping shape the future of perinatal and maternal-child healthcare in Japan, we greatly appreciate any support you can provide.
Donations to Aiiku Hospital and Aiiku Clinic are managed by our parent organization, the Social Welfare Corporation Boshi Aiiku Kai. We deeply appreciate your consideration and support in helping us fulfill our mission.
